Hells Headbangers: Shitfucker + Nocturnal Graves + Profanatica + Nekrofilth + Nexul

HellsHeadbangersReviews by Jason Guest

Have you had a long day and fancy putting your feet up to some nasty, grimy, scummy, grubby, obscene, blasphemous filth? Yes? Well, your lucks in because Hells Headbangers are always on hand to service your sacrilegious needs and here we have five of their latest offerings for your disrespectful delight.

With thirty years of unremitting blasphemy to their name, New York’s Profanatica bring us their third album, Thy Kingdom Cum; from the recently re-formed Australian blackened death machine Nocturnal Graves, we have album number two, …From The Bloodline Of Cain; Cleveland, Ohio scumbags Nekrofilth bestow upon the world their début album in the shape of Devil’s Breath; and we also have the debut 7” entitled Nexulzifer from the Texan blackened death merchants Nexul. Yep, it’s blasphemous filth all the way, folks. So where better to begin than with the charmingly-titled Suck Cocks In Hell from that charmingly-named band, Shitfucker.

Shitfucker – Suck Cocks In Hell

Be honest. You’re reading this for the same reason I’m listening to this album: the band name. Endearing isn’t it? And yes, the music does sound exactly like what the name suggests: messy and murderous. Together since 2005 and with a few demos, EPs, and a couple other releases to their name, it’s only now that these faecal fetishists have decided to take their first full length dump. Imagine the d-beat punk attitude of Discharge, the much-lauded instrumentally-disabled black metal of Venom, and the lo-fi black/thrash of Bathory combined with the lawn-killing stench of Motorhead and you’ve got a good idea of what to expect from this mob. Vicious and uncompromising and well worth a chuckle, the grim delight of this anarchically tongue-in-cheek and completely repulsive poop-party makes Sid Vicious look like an X-Factor contestant. There are two things you need to listen to this: lubricant for before, and wet wipes for afterward. Disgustingly brilliant!

Nocturnal Graves – …From The Bloodline Of Cain

With …From The Bloodline Of Cain being my first exposure to Australian blackened thrashers Nocturnal Graves, one thing’s for sure: it won’t be my last. This is the kind of ferocity that makes most other blackened thrashers look tranquil by comparison. Formed in 2004 and then disbanding in 2010, fortunately for us, vocalist/bassist (as well as guitarist and drummer on earlier works) Nuclear Exterminator recognised the power that his unit had at its behest and reformed the band in 2012. Intense throughout, this is bestial, brutal, and bruising, the band spanning the spectrum between caustic and violent riffs and deep and heavy grooves with consummate ease and devastating impact.

Opener ‘Promethean War’, with its frenzied lead break and rampant riffing, is a damaging declaration of the band’s revitalized destructive intent. Next comes the unremitting assault of ‘Slave Annihilation’, Nocturnal Graves’ ferocity unimpeded, they push deeper into controlled chaos, the intensity rising even higher and spilling over into track three, ‘The Conqueror’s Flame’. Usually at this point, we’re treated to a track that, if not a down-tempo beast, at least features a slower mid-section where the band flexes their instrumental muscles. Not so for Nocturnal Graves. Should the music demand a change, they ram the intensity levels up with either a tempo increase or introduce a riff of such complexity you’d swear that guitarists Decaylust and Shrapnel had seven fingers on each hand! With their song-craft skills matched by their technical ability and their strength as a band, let’s hope that …From The Bloodline Of Cain marks a new – and long – era for Nocturnal Graves. This is a hell of a start.

Profanatica – Thy Kingdom Cum

Formed in 1990 and then disbanding in 1992 after a few demos, splits, and EPs, mainstay Paul Ledney reformed Profanatica in 2001, the band releasing their first full length Profanatitas De Domonatia in 2007. Black metal incarnate, it was as blasphemous and obnoxiously filthy as the clean (relatively speaking, of course) production would allow, as was the follow-up, 2010’s Disgusting Blasphemies Against God. 2013 and Profanatica are still sticking to their deity-destroying philosophy. Simple-but-savage single-string riffs collide with mauled melodies and grand, demonic atmospherics as Ledney spews his vitriolic loathing of all things holy into the vomitus air.

Their devotion to the black art as resolute as their desecration of the golden boy of all golden boys, the riffs are hammered out as if they were hammering Christ to a concrete crucifix destined to be cast into the pit of hell. With structures designed to nail the point home – i.e., repeated to the point of defeat – the serrated edge of the album sharpens with every rancid riff, every bilious blast beat, and every blasphemous bark. But it soon becomes tedious. While ‘Definite Atonement’ and ‘Ropes Of Hatred’ are the most outstanding tracks on the album, elsewhere the riffs, the melodies, even the tracks soon become indistinguishable. Some variation or even innovation wouldn’t go amiss. But if it’s tried-and-tested raw and primitive black metal that you want, you’d be hard-pushed to find anything to match this.

Nekrofilth – Devil’s Breath

While taking a break from his hectic schedule of slaying Christianity, Nunslaughter guitarist Zack Rose likes to indulge his other hobbies of death, filth, violence, drug abuse, and insanity with death/thrash disfigurers Nekrofilth. Their début album, the sweetly-titled Devil’s Breath, is twenty six minutes of ruthless riffing, drubbed-to-death drums, bestial barks, and evil enunciations wrapped up in thirteen tracks laced with as much dark humour as they are with a raw and unstoppable energy. While tracks such as ‘Death Rush’ and ‘I’m A Degenerate’ are nihilistic blasts of anarchic-for-the-sake-of-it punk-infused venom, ‘Junkie Cunt’ and ‘Volcanic Zit’ are absurdly hilarious. As for ‘Smear The Sleaze’, were this the 80s, this is the track that would have guaranteed them the seal of (dis)approval from the PMRC. If you like your death and thrash metal mashed with plenty filthy punk spunk, Devil’s Breath will be right up your dirtbox, but the novelty might soon wear off.

Nexul – Nexulzifer (7”)

The first release from Nexul is a mass of monstrous noise, chaos and cacophony. The band’s sound is an all-consuming miasma that devours all it encounters and rapidly regurgitates in one unending and near-indistinguishable infernal racket. The vocals are deep and hoarse and smack of filth-ridden reverb; the guitars are a mass of menace, the Slayer-like squeals and yowls descending into dark and dense hacksaw riffs; and the drums crash, smash, and hammer their way through an array of blast beats and destructive brutality. But manifest in this indecipherable body of filth, fury, and mayhem are three bestial tracks that are without mercy or remorse. Album. Now.
