Thompson Square had never played in Scotland. Despite 10 Country Hit Singles, including a couple of Number 1’s, and a variety of CMA Awards. While their compatriots like Lady Antebellum and Little Big Town regularly play to 10,000 people at Glasgow’s other venues, Thompson Square are booked to play at the small Oran Mor? To further mystify, they are opening act for Eric Pasley!
The hard edged country band are based around husband and wife team Keifer and Shawna Thompson. They operate as a country vocal duo, generally with a real drive behind the music. The puzzle about the venue only began to make some sense when a packed out crowd are ready and waiting at 7.30pm for this “support band” who hit the stage as an unplugged duo and kick off with “I Got You”, the first track from their debut album.
The crowd response in this small venue can only be described as phenomenal – with the biggest “taken aback” expressions you can imagine on the faces of Keifer and Shawna. “We thought we were walking out to a crowd of about five people. Everyone told us our music hadn’t reached here – the record company hadn’t promoted our albums”. Early on in the set the emotive “Glass” brought the place down, as the favourites continued – “Everything I Shouldn’t be Thinking About” and “If I Didn’t Have You”
Shawna has an upcoming solo project based around traditional country music, and she previewed “Lean on Neon”. The crowd response was so overwhelming she was left with tears rolling down her cheeks. “Masterpiece “ and “I Know this Guy” were highlights from their latest release before the band finished with Number One single “Are you going to Kiss me or Not ?”
I predict they will be back in Glasgow very soon and filling one of the major venues.
