Fancy a bit of culture? ‘Owsabout a visit to Avignon, France? Once the seat of papal power, a treasury of art and architecture – including the Palais des Papes, a medieval fortress and papal palace – the  fabled bridge Pont d’Avignon, and an annual performing arts festival are, according to the tourist information website, amongst the reasons one should pay a visit to this beautiful city in the south of France. Well, you’d better pack your bags sharpish because buried somewhere in the underground are Mudbath, a sludge/stoner/doom metal band whose dragging tempos, very distorted guitars, hammered drums and bleak vocals are so heavy that they would make even an elephant involuntarily vacate its bowels. So, I hear you ask, why should I be interested in something that’s gonna make me shit myself? Well. If you want low, slow, and crushing doom that as heavy and as hard as a heavyweight boxer with a penchant for punching the crap out of a parade of elephants, then put on your sou’wester, pull up a ring side seat, and clench.

The discordant guitars of Micka and Flo, Marco’s razor-tooth bass lines and Luke’s stomping drums of ‘Loserwood’ are topped off by Félix’s demented sporadic shrieks. The jarring riffs of ‘Mudjahideen’, despite being uglier than the aforementioned boxer after round three of the on-going battle, lumber along with all the devastating power of a frustrated and flatulent rhinoceros. And ‘Smells Like Teen Cunt’ – gladly nothing to do with that band – packs more weight than a Sumo wrestler with a fistful of McDonalds’ vouchers tucked into his Mawashi. The guitars and bass shout, bark and roar their might, and the lead breaks howl with intensity; the fat and beefy bastard drums are bludgeoning; and the vocals scream bloody murder. Low, slow and crushing, the three tracks in twenty two minutes that make up Red Desert Orgy are a hefty bunch of thoroughly dismal and tortured delight. Mudbath indeed. The capital of Christendom of the middle ages looks about ready to be floored. I can feel the foundations rumbling. Or is that me? Uh oh! Gotta go…
