F4 – It’s All About You

Review by Tony Gaskin

It’s always nice to stumble across a local band that’s not come to your attention before. Such is the case with Burton based F4 who I saw live at a gig in Brum a few months back.

I must confess to being a bit slack in getting this review of their 4 track EP out there, it’s not for want of trying, I listen to this EP on a regular basis to be honest, especially when I’m in a chilled out mood and that should give you an inkling of what this small taster from the band is all about.

It falls into that category of easy listening alternative rock, but with a bite. You can chill out or rock out to these tracks depending on your mood, the rhythms glide along nicely but have enough of an edge to them so that you can tap that foot and bang that head if that’s what you want to do.

EP opener and title track “It’s All About You” bounces along effortlessly and is a great summers afternoon track, whilst the heavy bass lines of “Ebb & Flow” reinforce the harder edge to this band, and keeps the up-beat pace going.

There’s some great song writing here and I’d love to see what they can produce with a full album. The songs remind me of my youth listening to those maverick bands such as XTC and Squeeze with the emphasis on the lyrics.

The final two tracks keep up the high standard, with “Dent” showing off front man Dave Rowland’s vocals to the full. Passionate and emotional, this is the one element for me that helps raise this band above others of a similar vein.

The EP closes out with the track “Almost Gone” which has a very Crowded House feel to it. This band has a lot to offer and show much promise, I sincerely hope we get more from this band soon.
