Evil Army – I, Commander (7 inch EP)

Review by Jason Guest

Hells Headbangers

Filthy, dangerous thrash with a shitload of attitude. That’s pretty much all that you need to know about this EP. Their first release in five years and Evil Army haven’t changed one iota. Straight-ahead, no bullshit thrash delivered at neck-breaking speeds is the order of the day. Rob Evil’s harsh bark is akin to the German bands of thrash’s 80s heyday and suitably menacing while his guitar work rips through the speed metal riffs and fairly sloppy lead work like a rusty butcher knife through gnarled flesh. And sounding like tiny tins and cardboard boxes, the drums clatter their way through the relentless barrage. Yep, the sound quality’s pretty naff and the performances are pretty ragged, but as with Satanic Threat’s In To Hell, it’s the barely-containable energy and the fuck-you-attitude that fuels this release that makes it well worth a blast. And a loud one at that.
