This night really was about as barbaric as it gets. Stripped to the bone in your face and down your throat death metal. Apologies to local openers Spawned From Hate; just could not get there in time for your set, hope to catch you soon.
On a night when the bands were almost in competition with each other to find who had the most grotesque name Cancerous Womb wasted no time in getting straight down to basics.
Having travelled all the way down from Scotland these hard-hitters were eager to make an impression and certainly did just that. They had a few followers with them from Edinburgh and proceeded to execute a rabid set of venom and high-powered velocity.
Cancerous Womb and Spawned From Hate will be supporting Spanish death metal kings Wormed at The Roadhouse in Birmingham on November 13th in what promises to be another seriously intense gathering.
While the tartan tyrants were as heavy as a wheelbarrow full of dumbbells, Pighead somehow managed to come in an ounce or two heavier.
The German crush mob were as deep and penetrating as a North Sea oil rig. The gravel-laden vocals of bearded frontman Martin made the Asylum floor vibrate.
Not a million miles away from fellow swineheads Pig Destroyer, the Berlin blitzcrew smashed their way through material from last year’s incendiary Rotten Body Reanimation release before a pretty dumbstruck Asylum crowd. While bestial, barbaric and blood-curdling accurately captures the Pighead philosophy they have the technical ability to present it wrapped up in bite size tasty chunks – sausage on a stick!
The near thankless task of following the teutonic tornado of destruction that Pighead undoubtedly are fell to Swiss stormtroopers Carnal Decay.
The only band of the night to feature a female band member in guitarist Isa, Carnal Decay served up a melodic death metal sound with pounding seismic breakdowns during which bass and drum combined to shake the Asylum walls.
Cap wearing singer Michael commanded the small stage right from opener ‘Chopping Off the Head’ with energy levels set at a height deserving of a bigger crowd.
With songs like ‘These Hands Will Close Your Eyes Forever’ ‘Shotgun Facelift’ and ‘On Top of the Food Chain’, Carnal Decay show just why they hold the title of Switzerland’s finest death metal exports.
‘See You in Hell’ provided a suitably stomach-crunching climax to a sweltering evening that proved, if nothing else, it is possible to perform death metal while wearing flip flops and get away with it!
