Black Sabbath – Heaven And Hell & The Mob Rules (Deluxe Editions)

0

Two Black Sabbath albums that need no introduction are given the  deluxe treatment this month with the release of these expanded editions as both 2 x CD and 2 x Vinyl formats, each including the original albums and a selection of bonus material that encompasses live cuts, B sides and mono versions.

Released in April 1980, Heaven and Hell saw Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward joined by Ronnie James Dio who had enjoyed a solid run of albums with Rainbow. The addition of the American vocalist saw a significant shift in the Sabbath sound; the music was more immediate, more compact and more commercial. These factors were crucial for Sabbath at a time when Hard Rock and Heavy Metal was enjoying a resurgence and a host of younger bands were very much at the forefront and leading the charge. Although Geezer had largely written Sabbath’s lyrics up until this point, Dio’s medieval sword and sorcery inspired imagery took over and, coupled with some irresistible hooks and catchy choruses, ensured the album was a soaring success.

Songs like ‘Neon Knights’, ‘Children of the Sea’ and the title track are all rightly regarded as classics and there is little more to say about an album that is so ingrained in the memory banks. In recent times you could have been forgiven for thinking that Sabbath only existed in their original configuration but of course there was so much more terrific music from them to be enjoyed. Bonus cuts include live material from their US tour in 1980 and Hammersmith Odeon the following year including and epic twelve minute version of ‘Heaven and Hell’ itself.

By the time it came to record the follow up, The Mob Rules, there had been another change in the Sabbath line-up with Bill Ward replaced by Vinnie Appice (who himself would go on to play a huge part in Dio’s subsequent career). Following a similar format to its predecessor there were some hard rocking singles in ‘Turn Up The Night’ and ‘The Mob Rules’ along with more epic numbers ‘Falling Off the Edge of the World’ and ‘The Sign of the Southern Cross’. More live cuts and alternate versions make up the bonus material, including versions of some of the albums deeper cuts ‘Country Girl’ and ‘Slipping Away’ from Hammersmith. The Mob Rules may not be as well remembered as Heaven and Hell but is nevertheless highlighted by superb songwriting, dark and foreboding riffs and of course Dio’s incredible voice.

Of course before the sad passing of Ronnie James Dio in 2010 this line-up of Sabbath would get back together, split up again and then get back together again. These two albums have more than stood the test of time and these latest editions are terrific additions to the catalogue. Let’s hope we see more Sabbath releases outside of the 70’s albums given the deluxe treatment in the future.
