A Fucking Elephant – Seven Inches

Review by Jason Guest

Nefarious Industries

Okay, so the band name alone is going to raise a few eyebrows, but what about those track titles? ‘I’m Addicted to Drugs & Sex and I Want You To Choke Me’, and ‘A Bunch of Good Looking Round Eyes’. Who need lyrics when you’ve got titles like this? Yep, the music is as bizarre as those titles suggest.

Erratic, irregular, and jagged, the disjointed 5/4 rhythmic overload of ‘I’m Addicted to Drugs & Sex and I Want You To Choke Me’ may very well sound like a mess to the uninitiated, but woven into the contorted shapes lies a curiously catchy melody and plenty of warped hooks that slowly emerge out of the intense and precise delivery. ‘A Bunch of Good Looking Round Eyes’ rolls out of the enclosure and collapses into a bungled mass of intertwined rhythms and ostensibly shambolic melodies. Whilst that which spills from the speakers may appear to be no more than haphazard instrumental cacophony jammed out with only hope and fortune as their guide, the intelligence behind tracks becomes apparent upon every listen.

AFElephant - Seven InchesGreg Meisenberg’s drums are solid, his lines are driving and dynamic and all with an eye to complimenting Matt Keys’ insane guitar work. Keys’ tone ranges from the deep and the charged to the fuzzy and soft as his lines roll over, into, and through each other to produce wave on wave of self-propagating textures. Chaotic and technical, listening to guitarist Matt Keys and drummer Greg Meisenberg symbiotic communication manifest itself in such dynamically charged music is jaw-dropping. Dissonant, spasmodic, unbalanced, lopsided, crooked, skewed, whatever; one thing is for sure: With only Seven Inches from A Fucking Elephant, two tracks are nowhere near enough. More please.

Nice review Jason, this is brilliant stuff! ‘…Roundeyes’ is math rock at its most hypnotic, is it not?
